How to hire: the Louisiana rules

What license does a Louisiana landscaper hold?

The Horticulture Commission, part of LDAF, licenses landscape horticulturists. The license covers carrying out a landscape architect's plans, recommending and installing plantings, and selling and caring for nursery stock. A planting drawing made by a landscape horticulturist must carry that person's name and license number.

When does a landscaping job need a contractor license?

Work that is only landscaping is exempt from the state's home improvement license. Hardscape built onto the house, such as a slab, a covered patio tied to the house or a pergola on footings, is contractor work, and the license depends on the project value: a home improvement license from $7,500 to under $50,000 for work that isn't structural, and Residential Construction for structural work at $7,500 or more or any home job at $50,000 or more.

Who can run gas or power to an outdoor kitchen?

The licensed trades. Natural-gas fitting is licensed by the State Plumbing Board through 2026 and moves to the LSLBC on January 1, 2027. Electrical work of $10,000 or more needs the LSLBC Electrical classification. Ask whose license the gas and electrical work will be done under.

  4. What does the first season of care include, and what costs extra?
  5. Will I get the work and the price in writing?
